Reaching out in our own community–that's the theme of our parish outreach efforts. There are many needs within greater Dover among those who suffer from poverty and hunger, who struggle to gain academic and employment skills, and who are recovering from drug and alcohol abuse or from cancer. All parishioners are encouraged to help.
Recently, Oprah Winfrey talked about her childhood of poverty and said that one year at Christmastime, someone gave them gifts her own family was unable to provide. That single act of kindness had a major impact on her life as a young girl, giving her hope and encouragement that carried her into her success later in life.
Anyone can provide that single act of kindness that might change someone's life.
There are several opportunities within our focus on supporting local organizations:
Long-term or regular commitments aren't necessary. Some parishioners help in one of the efforts once a month, or only occasionally. In all cases, newcomers work with other parishioners who are already involved. They help starting people to make an effective contribution with whatever time they have available. We spend Wednesday evening at the House of Pride where we provide a coffee hour for clients recovering from drug and alcohol addictions. This is a great chance to work together with others from our parish.
Some of us already experience the welcome of House of Pride residents, who are so appreciative of our visits to encourage them on their path to recovery from addiction. Other volunteers have seen the joy of a child grasping knowledge of a concept taught in school that day. Many have experienced the gratitude of hungry individuals and families as they enjoy a warm and nourishing meal. Our lives are blessed by the chance to give such acts of kindness.
All are welcome to join us. Have fun, get to know new friends from Christ Church and the community, and make a difference in the life of someone soon. For more information, contact Jeanine Kleimo at 697-3363 or
Financial support for outreach activities of Christ Church comes in part from funds gathered through the Church "Store", sales of nuts for the Thanksgiving and Christmas seasons, and special fund raising efforts such as the dinner dance to benefit H.O.P.
